A bust was set up as the memory of his creator, Joseph B. Strauss, native of Chicago, which also has conceived the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington DC. This bust, placed in the small park in the south extremity of the Golden Gate Bridge (Side of San Francisco), is situated next to a portion of the cable of support of the bridge. It is only 92 cm in diameter, but contains all the same 27 ' 572 wires.
Those cables owe to be solid, with currents being able to reach near 100km / hour (60 miles) in the strait of San Francisco... Strait where opponents of the construction of the bridge, did not want to distort with wire cables. From the idea until the realization of his project, Joseph B. Strauss, spend 16 long years of his life to fight, finally to begin the works on January 5, 1933.
Four years were necessary for the construction of the bridge. Regrettably, seen the complexity of the construction site, eleven workers left their life, but 19 others were saved by the net of security invented by Strauss.
The inauguration of the bridge was on May 27, 1937 and the road traffic had crossed the Golden Gate Bridge since the next day.
